CATF COSTUME POSITIONS

Assistant to the Designer:
The assistant will work with each designer on all shows, and is primarily responsible for being the communication bridge between designer and costume shop; while reporting directly to the costume shop manager. The design assistant is the primary shopper, either shopping with or for the designer, mostly within the Shepherdstown/ Fredrick/Washington DC area. The assistant will also help facilitate any borrowing or rental of costumes as needed. In addition assisting the Shop Manager with balancing the budget, maintaining paperwork is also expected. It is also essential for the design assistant to have substantial experience in costume crafts and costume construction. The design assistant also must be able to perform in a supervisory role when needed. During tech rehearsals the assistant must be present with the designer(s) as needed. Valid driver’s license is necessary.

Job requirements include but not limited to:
-Must be able to operate a domestic sewing machine (Bernina)
-Must be able to operate domestic sergers
-Must have experience with industrial sergers
-Must be able to lift and carry 20lbs.
-Must be able to use an industrial iron
-Must have strong organizational skills
-Must have strong leadership skills
-Must have some experience in craftwork, including dyeing and painting.
-Must have basic computer skills, i.e. Microsoft office.



Draper/Wardrobe:
The draper will work on all shows, in a supervisory role (first hand and interns) for all construction and alteration needs. The first hand will report directly to the costume shop supervisor. Ideally the draper should have several years experience, and have strong flat patterning skills. Primarily the work at CATF is modern, and so the ideal applicant should feel comfortable with this construction. The draper will be in fittings as needed. Maintaining the shop and its equipment is expected. Wardrobe requirements include supervising the wardrobe crew during techs, run and strike of all shows. Wardrobe duties include, but are not limited to: preparing all costume pieces before the show (including any shoe Maintenance, steaming of costumes, and pressing), running the show (assisting actors in dressing, quick changes etc) and Maintenance (laundry, repairs, coordination with the drycleaners, preparation and maintenance of the dressing rooms). This position is a strike position, and is responsible for striking and restoring all costume equipment and than joining the general festival strike.

First Hand/Wardrobe:
The first hand should have several years experience in costume construction, as well as experience with alterations of both men and women’s clothing. The first hand will assist the draper with any cutting/ more complex projects. Along with strong stitching skills, experience with crafts is welcome! The first hand will assist the draper in maintaining the shop and its equipment. The first hand will report to the draper and shop manager. Wardrobe requirements include supervising the wardrobe crew during techs, run and strike of all shows. Wardrobe duties include, but are not limited to: preparing all costume pieces before the show (including any shoe Maintenance, steaming of costumes, and pressing), running the show (assisting actors in dressing, quick changes etc) and Maintenance (laundry, repairs, coordination with the drycleaners, preparation and maintenance of the dressing rooms). This position is a strike position, and is responsible for striking and restoring all costume equipment and than joining the general festival strike.

Intern/Apprentice/Wardrobe:
The costume interns are expected to have interest in all facets of the costume shop as they will be expected to work in all areas! Some stitching experience is needed, both hand and machine. The interns will work closely with the draper and first hand on both construction and alterations of all costumes, as well as keeping the costume shop properly maintained. The interns will also have opportunities with work on crafts for the shows as needed. Interns may also need to assist the design assistant with purchasing. Wardrobe duties include: prep work for the show, running the show, including quick changes, working with the actors and designer to maintain the integrity of the design. Maintenance includes any repair work, cleaning/laundry, and overall preservation of costumes for the run of the show, including strike. Wardrobe duties begin during tech rehearsals, continue throughout the run of the show, and include strike. This position is a strike position, and is responsible for striking and restoring all costume equipment and than joining the general festival strike.
